Many websites in the world are the only way people can speak, express and be free.Websites such as those that host content regarding news, human rights, elections etc are such websites.
The problem here is that, such websites being small and independent, are susceptible to attacks. More specifically, DDoS attacks, preventing access to important information.
A DDoS attack is a Distributed Denial of Service attack. DDoS attacks are a kind of digital attacks where loads of unwanted traffic is used to make the site unavailable to its users. The server cannot differentiate between the unwanted fake traffic and the actual traffic. It is overcome by this excess amount of traffic and slows down or sometimes is even taken offline.
Now this is where Google's Project Shield comes in. Project Shield is an initiative launched by Google Ideas to use Google's own DDoS attack mitigation technology to protect free expression online. The service allows other websites to serve their content through Google’s infrastructure without having to move their hosting location.
It is currently an invite only service for trusted testers.Sites serving content such as media, elections, human rights etc are considered.

Project Shield has been successfully used by a number of trusted testers, including Balatarin, a Farsi blog, and Aymta, a website providing early-warnings of scud missiles to people in Syria.
